How collection works by channel type
MD-sourced / curated channels (exhaustive)
Channels like Olive Young, Sephora, Cult Beauty, Douglas, and @cosme have curator-vetted assortments — Trendier collects every product in the relevant category.
Open marketplaces (top-ranked sampling)
Channels like Amazon, Coupang, and Target list vast numbers of third-party sellers. Trendier collects the top-ranked products in each category (typically top 100, sometimes deeper — e.g., Coupang top 300, Target top 480).
Direct sales-volume channels
Shopee (5 SEA markets) and TikTok Shop US expose actual sales counts in their UI. Trendier captures the top-ranked set along with sales volume data.
For exact coverage depth per channel, see "What data is available for each channel?"
Why top-ranked sampling is reliable
The top 100 on most open marketplaces accounts for the majority of category sales and review activity. Trend direction and movement across this set is what reflects market reality — the long tail rarely shifts category direction.
Currency and aggregation differences
Currency units and sales volume aggregation methods differ by channel. When running cross-channel comparisons, factor these differences into your interpretation. Your account manager can confirm specifics for any channel pair you're comparing.
Data parity across products
Trendier's products draw from the same captured dataset, but surface it on different cadences:
Dashboard — reflects the most recent published update; the reference for data freshness
Generator and AI Agent — run on Dashboard data directly
Library — combines Dashboard data with beauty-analyst curation
Signal — combines Dashboard data with external sources (media, social, industry)
AI Chat — runs on its own data layer with a longer update cadence than Dashboard
AI Chat's data layer updates consistently and continuously. To check what channels are currently active in AI Chat, ask AI Chat directly:
"What channels are available on Trendier AI Chat?"
The answer reflects its current data layer in real time.

Common follow-up questions
Why do item counts differ so much across channels for the same category?
MD-sourced channels capture all items; open marketplaces capture only the top-ranked. Channels also use different category taxonomies — what's "skincare" on Olive Young may be split across multiple subcategories on Amazon.
Does the lower count on Amazon make analysis less reliable?
No. The top 100 on most open marketplaces captures the majority of category sales and review activity. Trend direction and movement across this set is what reflects market reality, not absolute item count.
How often is data refreshed?
Trendier captures data daily from each channel. Data updates roll up on a weekly or more-frequent cadence depending on the e-commerce platform. Your account manager can confirm specifics for any channel you depend on.
Can I request expanded collection for a specific channel?
Reach out to your account manager. Expanding coverage depth (e.g., from top 100 to top 500) is being considered per channel as part of the roadmap.
